As we finish up the year, I want you to reflect on what makes a great reader. There are a number of strategies that can be used to become a better reader, and to work towards becoming a life long reader. What are important reading strategies? Why is it important to continue to read everyday? What advice would you give to younger students who are learning to read?

Lisa Jura and her family struggle with what to do as a family after Kristallnacht. Her parents decide to send Lisa on the Kindertransport to live with a cousin she has never met. She is going to a country that she has never been to and she does not speak the same language. Her mother asks her to make a promise to hold on to her music. Why do you think she says this? Also, her mother gives her a picture. What do you think Lisa is feeling as she leaves on the train? How would you feel going by yourself to a new country that speaks a different language by yourself?

During the time of World War II, the jewish were among the most outcasted or considered an outsider to the rest of the world. Define an outcast. Define an outsider. How would it be different during the time of WWII to be defined as an outcast or outsider than it is now?
